NUMBER 2 END HEADCODE BOX REPAIR

28 Jan , 2015

In our final inspection of 55 022 with Knorr-Bremse Rail Services staff at Springburn prior to work starting on the re-paint, a small area of corrosion was noticed on the edge of Number 2 end headcode box and repairs were authorised under what’s known as ‘AWA – Additional Work Arising’. Once work had started it was soon found that the corrosion was far worse than anticipated and was nearly all the way along the bottom edge. Three areas were cut away completely and new steel has been welded, rather than using filler or fibreglass. The three images show the headcode box with the corroded sections cut away, a piece of corroded steel after removal from the loco and use as a template and the end result after a days work with the headcode box just needing  tidying up prior to painting.tidying up prior to painting.
