FANTASTIC 3 DAYS AT THE NENE VALLEY DIESEL GALA

10 Apr , 2017

The Nene Valley Railway was another great event, helped immensely by nice weather on the Saturday and Sunday. It was good to see many Deltic fans in attendance and 55 022 being one of the star attractions, in its current disguise as 55 018 ‘Ballymoss’.

Our sales stand did very well and as always it was nice to hear so many kind complimentary comments regarding our activities and some fantastic donations were received, including a large one from Philip Hall, which is very much appreciated. Thanks very much to all who made purchases from our stand, every bit helps us maintain 55 022 in the best possible condition.

The loco suffered from low power problems, which developed through the day on Friday, when the loco finished up only pulling around 500 Amps!! Myself and Andy Marra worked well in to the night replacing a defective fuel injector on B4 cylinder, which is the top bank and the engine was still very hot having to lie on it to access where required. It was rather surprising that a problem had developed, bearing in mind that all 18 overhauled injectors had been fitted only last October. Additionally, the fuel strainer was found to be contaminated once again and we are now thinking that more modern low sulphur diesel is potentially causing issues. Should this issue raise itself again soon, we may consider investigating replacing the fuel strainer unit with a new custom made design which would be easier to monitor and replace the elements when required.

The loco worked all planned services and additional trains on Saturday and Sunday, due to the unfortunate failure of 45 041 ‘Royal Tank Regiment’, we wish the owners well in addressing the problem soon. Below is a list of all the trains worked by ‘RSG’ throughout the event. Plans for the near future include a 6 Monthly exam and then a move for our duties arranged at the Severn Valley Railway, details will be announced in due course.

Finally, thanks to everyone at the Nene Valley Railway for making us feel welcome and very much part of the team and Andy Marra for his much appreciated help.
